Bigger Than Us, Bigger Than You

God’s purpose

God’s Purpose

I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me.
I make known the end from the beginning,
from ancient times, what is still to come.
I say, ‘My purpose will stand,
and I will do all that I please.'”
Isaiah 46:9-10

God is. God reveals. God purposes. God is. God reveals. God purposes.

God is.  God reveals.  God purposes. God is.  God reveals.  God purposes.

Without these three fundamental truths, we would forever be adrift in a sea of uncertainty about our existence and our future. We have hope — specifically because God has revealed promises that tie directly to a purpose. Ultimately, that purpose is for us to dwell with Him “face-to-face” with inexpressible joy.

God’s Nature is Revelatory God’s Nature is Revelatory

He yearns to be glorified—to make Himself known to the creatures He loves. It has always been His intention, His plan—His purpose, to make Himself known to people whom He desires to bless.

King David grasped this urgency when he instructed Asaph, “Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.” 1 Chronicles 16:24

It is an astonishing invitation. The Author of Life offers Christ-followers the privilege of joining Him in his mission to glorify Himself by evangelizing all people groups on earth.

To be fully known and fully loved—it is the longing of each human heart—and God’s heart too. Beginning with His systematic creation of the universe to the first human couple, to the nation of Israel, to the progressive prophetic fulfillment of Jesus, and to His church’s formation—unmistakably, God enjoys process. In an unfolding drama of redemption, He makes himself known to the people He is gathering for Himself—to enjoy Him fully. God delights in the process of revealing His purpose to those who long for Him.

Christians agree with the refrain that God is “worthy” of all glory. He is indeed worthy, but it is often stated in a manner, that somehow by our actions, we can increase his glory.

The Bible is clear: God is Glorious We cannot add to His glory.

He is passionate about His glory. That is why he wants to make His glory known. As Dr. John Piper has astutely observed,

God is pursuing with omnipotent passion a worldwide purpose of gathering joyful worshippers for Himself from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. He has an inexhaustible enthusiasm for the supremacy of his name among the nations.

For from Him and through Him and for Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.” Romans 11:36
